Catalogue of the holdings of the University Libraryat Leyden. The subjects include theology, jurisprudence, medicine, philosophy, philology, political economy, history, belles-letters, classics, numismatics, etc. A single chapter enumerates the celebrated collection of 1,993 Oriental manuscripts in Persian, Turkish, Hebrew, Armenian, Coptic, etc.

Engraved t.p, 282 plates lacks ports. of Gorlaeus & Gronovius. Gorlaeus (Van Goorle), 1549-1609, Latin scholar especially of antique rings and gems. This work is anew edition of the work originally published in 1600, and expanded in 1609 and 1695. "Gorlaeus was a zealous collector..the first edition dated 1599. After a short prologue there follows 126 rings and 148 unset stones..A second, somewhat enlarged edition appeared in 1609 in Delft. The gems went to England, and later, in part, into the Arundel collection. Gronovius still found it worthehile to issue a new edition in 1695..The work was reprinted in 1707." Furtwanger. Condition: 1628 Bound in vellum, with raised bands to spine. title to spine in contemporary inked letters. Foxing throughout. Vellum spine has small split at bottom hinge. Banded spine with gilt decoration, title in gilt lettering. A.e.g. Very light browning and foxing, with occasional dampstains. Name in bottom margin of *1(t.p.) in vol.I, in old hand. Otherwise, a very nice copy. First and second volumes only of a three volume set. Engraved t.p. in vol.I plus two additional full page engravings in same. Engraved initials, head and tail pieces. A reimpression, line for line, of the 1640 edition, except for the added letter in vol.I of Gronovius to the king of Sweden. Seneca the younger (ca. 4 B.C.-A.D.65), the celebrated Roman stoic of Corduba, was young Nero's tutor, and later political advisor and minister to the emperor Nero. He committed suicide in 65 when under suspicion for participating in the Pisonian consipiracy. He is a very important source for the history of stoicism. Willems 672. Dibdin II, 206-7.
